The flexible pavement of a major four-lane highway (2 lanes in each direction) is the essential carrier for both
commuter and commercial traffic and carries 15,000 vehicles per day in both directions. The relatively free
draining clayey subgrade soil has a CBR of 6 % and is saturated for 15 percent of the time. The traffic has 21 %
commercial vehicles with an ESAL of 1.15 per commercial vehicle and the average annual growth rate is 1.0%.
The remaining life of the existing pavement structure shown in Figure 1 is 1.5 million ESALs.
5. The flexible pavement of a major four-lane highway ( 2 lanes in each direction) is the essential carrier for both commuter and commercial traffic and carries 15,000 vehicles per day in both directions. The relatively free draining clayey subgrade soil has a CBR of 6% and is saturated for 15 percent of the time. The traffic has 21% commercial vehicles with an ESAL of 1.15 per commercial vehicle and the average annual growth rate is 1.0%. The remaining life of the existing pavement structure shown in Figure 1 is 1.5 million ESALs. Using the following information:- - standard deviation =0.3. - drainage coefficient for base and sub-base =1.0 - a material layer coefficient ' a1? ' for new asphalt concrete =0.45 - reliability =95%. - change in serviceability ?PSI=2.4. Determine the following:- (a) The existing structural number. (10 marks) (b) A reliable pavement strengthening measure required for the next 20 years of service. Use the conversion MR?(PSI)=1500?CBR% (10 marks)
