The diagrams above show the schematic of a rail gun. A current of flows through the conducting rails and across a conducting "fuse" (a narrow piece of copper) between the rails. The projectile to be fired lies on the far side of the fuse. Immediately after the current starts to flow, the fuse melts and vaporizes to form a conducting gas between the rails. The currents in the rails produce a net magnetic field that cause a force to act on the gas. The gas is forced outward along the rails of length , pushing the projectile mass with acceleration . (a) Show, giving reason, the directions of the magnetic fields on a copy of diagram (b). (b) Identity, giving reason, the net magnetic field that produces the force . (c) Determine the magnitude of the force . (d) Calculate the strength of the net magnetic field that produces .
