1. The construction of a new office building has been proposed. Thorough site exploration and laboratory testing was performed via SPT testing, Shelby Tube sampling, unconfined compression testing, consolidated-drained (CD) triaxial testing, and incremental consolidation testing. The investigation found a relatively uniform overconsolidated illite clay deposit at the ground surface. The extensive aforementioned testing yielded the following soil data: - Moist unit weight - Saturated unit weight - Undrained shear strength - Effective cohesion - Effective angle of internal friction degrees The proposed building will have walls supported by strip (continuous) footings. The walls will apply per linear foot to the footing. The footings need to be embedded deep, and the ordinary high groundwater level is 3 feet beneath the ground surface. a. Using the Terzaghi bearing capacity theory with a factor of safety of 2.5 , calculate the required width of the strip footing for the short-term condition (i.e., undrained loading). b. Using the Terzaghi bearing capacity theory with a factor of safety of 2.5 , calculate the required width of the strip footing for the long-term condition (i.e., drained loading). c. Based on your answers to parts (a) and (b), what would you recommend as the minimum required width of the footings to satisfy both the short-term and long-term bearing
