Q1. A VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft can lift vertically off of the ground by ejecting exhaust gas vertically downwards from 4 nozzles. A scale model of a VTOL aircraft is shown in Figure 1. Only 2 of the 4 nozzles are shown for simplicity. If the exhaust gasses flow from the 4 nozzles at a velocity of 40 m/s, calculate the mass flow rate from each nozzle to just lift the model off the ground. Assume that each nozzle emits the same mass flow rate of gas. This assumption is not true in real world applications where varied mass flow rates and orientation of the nozzles allows for control of the vertical take-off.
