Procedure 1 Gather the modeling kit, a white sheet of paper, a pen, and a digital camera. 2 Review the key in Table 1. Check that the contents of your modeling kit match the key. Table 1. Element, color, and holes. 3 Practice describing the molecular structure of the formate ion \( \mathrm{CHO}_{2} \). Answer each of the following questions. Number of Valence Electrons: 4 Determine the number of valence electrons in \( \mathrm{CHO}_{2} \) - using the periodic table and record your answer in Data Table 1. Lewis Structures: 5 Draw the Lewis structure for \( \mathrm{CHO}_{2} \) on a piece of paper. 6 Take a photo of the drawing and upload the image into Photo 1.
Number of Valence Electrons: 4. Determine the number of valence electrons in \( \mathrm{CHO}_{2} \) w using the periodic table and record your answer in Data Table 1. Lewis Structures: 5 Draw the Lewis structure for \( \mathrm{CHO}_{2} \); on a piece of paper. 6. Take a photo of the drawing and uplaad the image into Photo 1. Note: \( \mathrm{CHO}_{2} \) ' has resonance structures, and there are two forms of the drawn ion. Draw both structures. VSEPR Models: 7. Use your moiecular modeling kit to create a \( \mathrm{CHO}_{2} \) ilon. Note: Although the ion has two Lewis structures, you only need to build one ion. 8 Take a photo of the model and uplaad the imsge into Photo 2 . Note: Consult Table 1 above to determine which pieces represent the \( \mathrm{C} \), \( \mathrm{H} \), and \( \mathrm{O} \) atoms. To create a double bond, use TWO of the long. flexible gray connectors. To create a single bond, use one of the short, inflexible connectors. Pink paddies represent lone pairs. The completed ion should have no "open" or unfilled holes. Atoms: 9 Determine the number of atoms and lone pairs surround the central atom. 10 Record your answer in the Data Table 1. Note: If there is more than one interior atom, list each. Geometry: 11 Identify the molecular geometry around each central atom. Refer to Fizure 11 as needed. 12 Record the molecular geometry in the Data Table 1.

Molecular geometries. 13 When you are comfortable with your answers for the previous step, click here for the correct answers. Carefully read the correct answers and compare them to your responses. Adjust your work as needed. 14 Practice the steps above until you feel comfortable describing the \( \mathrm{CHO}_{2} \) ion. Note: If you would like additional practice, describe the molecules in the introduction section.
