Problem formulation The electro/hydraulic lift, commonly known as a two-post car lift, is designed mainly to lift cars during repairs or other under-carrier work, see figure 1 . The lift is comprised of two symmetric vertical columns safely anchored to the ground. It is operated by an electric motor which controls a hydraulic pump to deliver hydraulic fluid to cylinders inbuilt in the vertical columns. This enables the lifting of two trolleys, one on each column, that in turn carry two swing arms each. You are the design engineer incharge of this project. You are expected to select the most appropriate section and materials for the swing arm design.
