Predict the major organic product of the reaction sequence described. Styrene \( (1.53 \mathrm{~g}, 0.011 \mathrm{~mol}) \) in methanol \( (30 \mathrm{~mL}) \) was added to a mixture of \( \mathrm{Hg}(\mathrm{OAc})_{2}(5.30 \mathrm{~g}, 0.016 \mathrm{~mol}) \) in methanol ( 100 \( \mathrm{mL}) \) at room temp. and stirred for 24 hours. Sodium hydroxide \( (3.0 \mathrm{M}, 16 \mathrm{~mL}) \) was added, followed by \( \mathrm{NaBH}_{4}\left(0.32 \mathrm{~g}^{2} 0.008\right. \) \( \mathrm{mol}) \) in \( \mathrm{NaOH}(3.0 \mathrm{M}, 16 \mathrm{~mL}) \) at \( 0^{\circ} \mathrm{C} \). The precipitated \( \mathrm{Hg} \) was removed by filtration. The product was isolated by diethyl ether extraction. After drying over \( \mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4} \), solvent was removed and distillation gave the product. (Adapted from: Senda, Y.; Kanto. H.: Itoh, H. J. Chem.
