Part C. Progeny Testing (2 Points) Syndactyly in cattle (also known as mule foot) is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Mule foot refers to the fusion or nondivision of the two developed digits of the bovine foot (see photo at right). To determine carrier status, a normal ( M??)bull is progeny tested by mating him to 35 normal (M_) cows. These cows are known to be out of homozygous normal (MM) dams but sired by a known mule foot carrier (Mm). 1. What proportion of the 35 cows to which the bull is mated are expected to carry the mule foot allele? 2. If the bull is a carrier (Mm), what is the probability that a resulting offspring will be phenotypically normal?
