Mass Spectrometry & Infrared Spectroscopy Activity Directions: Label the base peak and molecular ion (parent) peak in the mass spectrum. Use the quantitative data from the mass spectrum to compute/predict molecular formulas for the unknown molecule. Be sure to also calculate the degrees of unsaturation (DOU) for each molecular formula as well. For the IR spectrum, identify and label the absorptions for any functional groups that are present. Use the information from BOTH spectral outputs to produce illustrations of possible structures for the unknown molecule. Bonus: Draw at least 2 fragments with m/z ratios that match different peaks in your mass spectrum outputs.
