Genetics of Blood Types Your blood type is established by specific genes inherited from your parents: one blood-type gene from your mother and one from your father. These two genes determine your blood type by causing the presence or absence of the Type A and Type B antigen molecules on the red blood cells. Everyone has two copies of these genes, so there are six possible combinations of alleles (that is, genotypes): ?????? and ??i - both resulting in Type A blood, PBIB and IBi - both resulting in Type B blood, ?A?B - resulting in Type AB blood, ii - resulting in Type O blood.
Each biological parent gives one of their two ABO alleles to their child. For example, a mother who is blood type O has genotype ii and can only give an i allele to her son or daughter. A father who is blood type AB could give either an I? or a IB allele to his son or daughter. This couple could have children of either blood type A ( i from mother and AA from father) or blood type B ( i from mother and I3 from father). This is illustrated in the Punnett square below.
