Genetics of Blood Types Your blood type is established by specific genes inherited from your parents: one blood-type gene from your mother and one from your father. These two genes determine your blood type by causing the presence or absence of the Type A and Type B antigen molecules on the red blood cells. Everyone has two copies of these genes, so there are six possible combinations of alleles (that is, genotypes): and - both resulting in Type A blood, and - both resulting in Type blood, - resulting in Type blood, - resulting in Type blood. Each biological parent gives one of their two ABO alleles to their child. For example, a mother who is blood type has genotype and can only give an allele to her son or daughter. A father who is blood type could give either an or a allele to his son or daughter. This couple could have children of either blood type A ( from mother and from father) or blood type ( from mother and from father). This is illustrated in the Punnett square below. Suppose that a mother has blood Type and genotype and the father has blood Type and genotype I . 8. Draw a Punnett square to show the possible genotypes and blood types (phenotypes) for their children: Were the babies switched?
