Gene Likens and Herbert Bormann conducted an experiment in which all of the trees covering a stream basin were felled (cut down) but not removed. They compared this experimental site to a control area in which trees were not felled. They found that the rate at which nutrients were 'lost' from the land and entered the stream: increased in both sites because of high precipitation rates over time remained the same in the two sites was higher where then trees were felled than where they remained alive was slower where the trees were felled than where they remained alive
