Figure 1 illustrates a pinned base plate connection for the steel column 250UC89.5 (Grade 300), which is subjected to axial compression force (N*= 120 kN) and shear forces (V,*-20 kN) and (V,* =15 kN). The end of the steel column is cold sawn. 4 mm SP fillet weld is used along column section profile. The steel column is supported by a concrete foundation. Design information of the base plate is given below: Design Information: • The compressive strength of concrete, fc' = 25MPa • The cross-sectional area of base plate, A? = 300 mm x 300 mm • The cross-sectional area of concrete foundation, A? = 400 mm x 400 mm • Four M16 bolts (Grade 4.6/s) are used for the connection and bolt capacity (DN) for M16 bolt is 50.2kN. • Yield strength of base plate, fy= 250 Mpa Thickness of base plate, t= 15 mm Friction co-efficient, µ= 0.55 • Weld capacity (DV)= 0.652 kN/mm 300x300x15 base plate N?* = 120kN 200 mm 400 mm Figure 1: Pinned base plate connection Check the column resistance to sliding, pVd1. Use p=0.8 for column resistance.
