Fatigue cracks around the rivet holes in the fuselage of Aloha Airlines Flight 243 resulted in disaster as shown in Figure 4.  After inspection of a similar airliner, cracks were found around rivet holes in the fuselage skin (see Figure 5) which is made of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy.  For this alloy:  Sy = 350 MPa, Kc=45 MPaÖm, Su = 400 MPa, EL% = 11.

 

a.)Will the fuselage rupture immediately?  State clearly all assumptions required to solve this question.

b.) What is the critical crack length (tip-to-tip) for this structure?
