BIOL 3135: Ecology Exercise: Adaptations Tree ID Prior to conducting this exercise, thoroughly review the associated exercise video. Objective: assess leaf and twig phytographic features for common Piedmont tree species, identify "unknown" specimen using these features and a dichotomous key, and relate how the phytographic features may help a particular species to be better adapted to its particular environment. Instructions: in this exercise, you can refer to the diagrams of Leaf and Twig Phytographic Features (included at the end of this document) and use the "Keys to the Common Trees of the Georgia Piedmont" dichotomous key (attached as part of this assignment) to complete the following tasks: 1. Provide the leaf characteristics and the species identification for the 3-specimen pictured in the following pages. Please note that each red arrow in the pictures is pointing to an axillary bud. 2. Use the dichotomous key to identify an "unknown" tree specimen of your choice. Please note that the dichotomous key does not include shrubs and many ornamental trees that are common on college campuses and urban areas. Thus, if you have persistent trouble identifying a particular tree, it may be advisable to switch to a different specimen. Make sure to take a picture of the tree with yourself in the image to document that the picture(s) were not simply downloaded from the internet. The picture(s) should clearly show the leaves and twigs of this specimen. Also, make note of the environmental conditions (e.g., light availability, slope position, soil characteristics, etc.) where the "unknown" tree specimen was growing. Writing Assignment: for the "unknown" specimen that you identified in Task #2 above: 1. Describe the steps in the dichotomous key and the associated phytographic features that led to your particular identification choice. As noted above, you should include a clear picture(s) of the leaf and twig features that led to your species identification.
