Beginning in 2002, the Los Angeles Police Department began reporting data on traffic stops. This was the result of a consent decree agreement with the US Department of Justice in response to allegations of discrimination in policing in LA. In this project, we will examine the data in order to draw our own tentative conclusions about whether it supports a claim of racial discrimination in policing in LA. Listed below are counts from traffic stops made by LA police between January and June of 2005 . The data include counts of how many drivers of each race (White, Black, all others) were stopped, how many of those stops resulted in a search of the vehicle, and how many of those searches resulted in the discovery of evidence of a crime. The data were taken from the article "Driving While Black in the City of Angels," CHANCE, 19:2 (2006), pp. 43-46. LAPD Searches of Those Stopped, Jan-June 2005 - African-American 12,016 of 61,188 - White 5,312 of 106,892 - All drivers 43,424 of 313,828 LAPD Searches with Discoveries Made, Jan-June 2005 - African-American - White 5,134 of 12,016 - All drivers 3,006 of 5,312 25,250 of 43,424 Respond in complete sentences in accordance to the project rubric to each of the questions below. 1. According to the LAPD data, what proportion of AfricanAmericans who were stopped for a traffic violation had their vehicles searched? (After finding the proportion, convert it to a percentage rounded to one decimal place.) 2. According to the LAPD data, what proportion of White drivers who were stopped for a traffic violation had their vehicles searched? (After finding the proportion, convert it to a percentage rounded to one decimal place.) 3. According to the LAPD data, what proportion of searches of vehicles driven by African-Americans resulted in discovery of evidence of a crime? (This is called the "hit rate" for searches.) (After finding the proportion, convert it to a percentage rounded to one decimal place.) 4. According to the LAPD data, what was the "hit rate" for searches of vehicles driven by White drivers? (After finding the proportion, convert it to a percentage rounded to one decimal place.)
