BISC161: CeLl FUNCTIONS AND CELL SPECIALIZATION Cells are the basic unit of all living things. This means that all living things are made up of cells. And all cells are going to come from other, preexisting cells. We often talk about the cell as if it is always the same, no matter where you find it, but in reality, each type of cell that you find performs different roles. To be the best at its role, the cell must "specialize" or dedicate itself to the processes that it will do for its entire life. On your Blackboard you will find a packet that contains images of different types of cells from a variety of organisms. You will read the information about different cills in the packet. You must choose one animal cell, one plant cell and the bacteria. From that information, you will decide what you expect to find within each type of cell and at what abundance (e.g., organelles, cytoskeletons etc.). Then you will complete the 4 questions on the second page. This worksheet is due when you enter lab on the week of the 13 Sept. 1. White Adipose Fat Cell: What are functional and structural characteristics unique to this type of cell? II. Sperm cell: What are functional and structural characteristics unique to this type of cell? III. Plant Leaf Cell: What are functional and structural characteristics unique to this type of cell? IV. Plant Sugar Transport Cells (Phloem): What are functional and structural characteristics unique to this type of cell? V. Brown Adipose Fat Cell: What are functional and structural characteristics unique to this type of cell? VI. Prokaryote Cell/Bacteria: What are functional and structural characteristics unique to this type of cell? VII. Plasma B Cell: What are functional and structural characteristics unique to this type of cell? 1. When looking at the different cell types, do any of them match the descriptions of the typical prokaryote/eukaryote cell found in your textbook, chapter 5 ? Why or why not? 2. Why wouldn't all plant cells look the same? (hint: think of their functions) 3. Why wouldn't all animal cells look the same? 4. Please go to chapter 25 and look at some examples of single celled protists. How are they different from, say, a fat cell in humans?
