Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs realizing personal potential, self- fulfillment, seeking personal growth and Self-actualization peak experiences achievement, mastery, independence, status, dominance, Esteem prestige, managerial responsibility work group, family, affection, relationship Love \& belonging security of health, resources; order, law, limits, stability Safety air food drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep, homeostasis, Physiological excretion Maslow believed we require esteem and respect: -from ourselves- as feelings of self-worth. -from other people- as status, recognition, dominance, and importance. Maslow, 1954 -CTQ: Which theorist(s) considered status and dominance to be a neurotic need? Why the difference between these two theorists interpretations of this "need?" In your response, cite your text for support. - On slide 3 you will find specific qualities, or needs, that must be achieved in order to satisfy that level of the "pyramid." - On slides \#5,6, and 7 you will find three critical thinking questions (CTQ's), that address the following levels of Maslow's hierarchy: - Slide 5: Safety and Security - Slide 6: Belongingness and Love - Slide 7: Self-Esteem - I would like for each of you to address one of these levels and its question(s). - In your response, include a specific application, using a real or imaginary person. - If someone else has already addressed a level and its question, please choose another. If they are all taken, address the one that has been responded to the least. Then, I would like for you to address the following, found on slide \#9: - Why must your chosen level of Maslow's Hierarchy be fulfilled (to a large degree) in order for an individual to reach selfactualization? In your response, discuss one or more specific qualities (see qualities for each level of the pyramid, slide 3) that your level provides that support one specific characteristic of self-actualizers (See list, slides 10 and 11). And, of course, you will need to include your reasons why you see a connection between your chosen level and the characteristic of self-actualization it supports. My example: From level 1 of the hierarchy (which is not available to you): In level 1 a person will need to obtain shelter and food (Engler, pg. 324. 12 ). This may, in tum, allow that person to "resist cultural conformity" (a characteristic of self-actualizers). The availability of shelter and food presupposes the potential for autonomy (Engler. pg.327. table 13.1), since one would not be dependent on others or society to provide the level 1 basic needs for them. Please note: The above example is not a complete post. This is a two-part question, so format your paragraphs wisely; written quality does count? - Your responses need to be thorough and well written (please see Discussion Grading Criteria). - Cite your text including page and paragraph numbers within your writing to support specific ideas. (other resources may be used additionally). - Submit your post by using the Reply button (bottom left), and address your post as Post \#1. - Please submit Post and Post \#2 as separate posts, and title them as such.
