Of the various ways that are known to separate enantiomers (process called resolution), the most used is the preparation and separation of diastereomers. A pair of enantiomers (in equal proportion are known as a racemic mixture) can be separated if they are chemically transformed into a pair of diasteroisomers by reacting them with an optically active compound.
