A bicycle brake block made from synthetic rubber is mounted on the metal rim of the bicycle wheel. When the brake is applied the friction between the wheel and the brake block creates heat which is all transferred to the break block causing it to heat up. Note the brake block will fail if the temperature exceeds 70?C. The Brake block is 60 mm long and 31mm thick. The face in contact with the wheel rim is rectangular in shape with dimensions 10mm wide and 60 mm long. The back of the block is 15mm wide and 60mm long. A two-dimensional Sketch is given in Figure 1 to aid your understanding. Heat is generated by friction at the surface of the block by friction at a rate of 6 k(W)/(m)2. All of this heat is transferred to the block. Heat leaves the block from the back surface at a rate of 4k(W)/( m)2. No heat is lost from any other surface. 1.
