1.) Provided below is an aerial image of the Tharsis region of Mars. Tharsis is a vast volcanic plateau centered near the equator in the western hemisphere. The region is home to the largest volcanoes in the Solar System, including the three enormous shield volcanoes Arsia Mons, Pavonis Mons, and Ascraeus Mons, which are collectively known as the Tharsis Montes.

Based on the geologic evidence that is observed in this landscape, and your understanding of the relationship between plate tectonics and volcanism, which of the following tectonic settings best describes this landscape? (remember...look for "clues" to support your answer. If you do not see the clue, make no presumptions, look at only this evidence)

Group of answer choices

A) this region is an ancient Continental-Oceanic Convergent Zone

B) this region is an ancient Continental-Continental Convergent Zone

C) this region is an ancient Oceanic-Oceanic Convergent Zone

D) this region is an ancient divergent/ rift boundary

E) this region is an ancient transform boundary

F) this region is an ancient mantle plume (hotspot)

2) The map below highlights rocks of similar age and type for the continents of North America, Africa, and Eurasia. Radiometric dating of the oldest rocks in Florida (craton) indicates an age of 530 million years old. Younger rocks on top of the craton are thick layers of limestone followed by successive layers of sandstone.

Based on your analysis, it can be presumed that the Peninsula of Florida originated by

Group of answer choices

A) the accumulation of coral reefs in a warm tropical ocean followed by a sea-level retreat depositing sediments

B) the accumulation of volcanic materials and the deposition of marine sediments. This landmass was a piece of the continent of Africa that remained attached to North America during the separation of the supercontinent of Pangaea.

C) volcanic material being erupted through an oceanic divergent boundary

D) the subduction of the Atlantic Plate beneath the eastern coastline creating a volcanic island arc, very similar to how the island of Japan formed.
